Church of the Lutheran Brethren

President's Office - Why We Do It

The Office of the President’s calling is to provide leadership in fulfilling the mission of the Church of the Lutheran Brethren (CLB). What is that mission?
In response to God’s person and grace, we worship Him with everything we are in Christ, serve one another in Christian love and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with all people.
In the Office of the President, we continually ask ourselves this question: What will it look like when we can say mission accomplished? It is not a fixed image, as some would understand accomplishing a mission in a business, corporate, military, or even personal sense. The Church of Jesus Christ is a living organism. The accomplishing of our mission occurs when we serve and minister at the height of health and vibrancy. Here is what mission being accomplished looks like, for us:
We see God stirring in our church a fresh passion to reach beyond our own comfort to al people among whom God places us. We embrace God’s mission to bring the life changing Gospel to unreached people in Asia and Africa, and we sense God convicting us to more intentionally reach out to people who live in our midst in North America as well.

To achieve this vision of accomplishing our mission, we have banded ourselves together as interdependent congregations who combine our resources for greatest reach. This banding-together of churches is commonly called a “denomination” – sometimes it is referred to as a “synod” – and the ministries of the denomination are extensions of each local CLB congregation. Hence, the mission of the denominational ministries is:

To serve CLB congregations in their obedience to the Great Commission locally, nationally and internationally.

Denominational ministries are comprised of both “front line” mission personnel as well as administrative leadership, which brings us back to the Office of the President whose calling is to provide leadership in fulfilling the mission of the Church of the Lutheran Brethren, which is to serve the congregations in their obedience to the Great Commission locally, nationally and internationally.

In broad terms, here is how we try to do this:
  1. We provide coaching, encouragement and resources to congregations that will lead them to focus on Christ, fellowship in Christ, and follow Christ in making disciples of all peoples.
  2. We provide pastoral care, fellowship, and ministry resources to clergy nurturing their growth in personal devotion to Christ, pastoral skills, and physical/emotional health to encourage them in being Christ’s servants to family, congregation, peers, and community.
  3. We administer denominational structures by which congregations can envision and implement joint ministries to which the Lord is calling them.
